Icarus is the name of a project that was created in a completely unusual way from the very beginning – but no one had any idea how many vicissitudes it would still encounter. The experiment of two festivals involved in the European project Be SpectACTive – TANEC PRAHA and Divadelná Nitra – consisted in addressing teenagers from both countries to participate in the process of creating a new open-air work. It started with the selection of artists, followed by live discussions on the topic, then a joint creative work was planned, and the culmination was to be the premiere at the end of September at the Nitra Theatre.

COVID-19 entered the creative process without invitation. Instead of personal meetings, there were months of Zoom calls, recording, working in isolation. In August, the two groups of teenagers finally met again with the artists in Nitra in person, and the work began to take on clear outlines. A few days before the final residence in Nitra, however, there was a second lockdown, and the premiere was put on hold.

Behind the teams in Prague and Nitra are months of work, great discussions and strong ties. We will not give up.

Unbeknownst to the teenagers, the artists agreed on the theme of borders and freedom a year ago. The feelings of the teenagers at the time materialized during 2020 and continue to mature. We want to share with you at least virtually where the project has gone, what its creators have experienced and where they are heading. Find a moment before Christmas to think and debate with artists and teenagers, and come with us to witness COVID's creative reality. Icarus is worth it!
