Who we are

About

The TANEC PRAHA International Festival of Contemporary Dance is one of the biggest events in the cultural calendar of the Czech Republic. Since 1989, the festival has taken place every June, marking the culmination of the theatre season. In times of pandemics, the festival has also been held in autumn and occasionally in July or May. It showcases the diversity and quality of the current foreign and domestic dance scene, provides a platform for experimentation and crossover with other genres, and supports the creation of new works as a co-producer.

The program is aimed at both the general and professional public, from children to seniors. It is structured into program lines such as Events of the Season (major companies and personalities of the world dance scene at the opening or closing of the festival), festival co-productions in international cooperation, FTP JUNIOR (events for children and youth of different ages) and Open Air (dance in public and non-traditional space). The festival also provides a space for young artists, experiments (Aerowaves artists) and more. Currently, the festival is presented in more than 20 cities and towns across the Czech Republic, featuring both indoor and outdoor performances.

The TANEC PRAHA Festival has long enjoyed the patronage and support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the City of Prague. Some productions have been supported by embassies in the Czech Republic, and on the festival's fifth anniversary it received the patronage of President Václav Havel and now President Petr Pavel. The festival received a significant award on its 25th anniversary in 2013, being ranked first in the EU Culture program in a competition of 235 European festivals of all genres. In 2017, it became the only festival in the Czech Republic to receive the EFFE (Europe for Festivals) Award, for its exceptional quality, commitment and the impact of its work in the local context. TANEC PRAHA continues to be part of the EFFE Guide to European Festivals.

The TANEC PRAHA Festival was the motivating factor behind the establishment of the non-governmental non-profit organization Tanec Praha (z.ú.) in 1991 and remains the NGO's main activity.

Mission

Our mission is to annually and continuously organize an international festival at the highest artistic and organizational level. The festival aims to present inspiring and high-quality works of contemporary dance and movement theatre to the broadest public, to facilitate the discovery and comparison of the latest trends from different continents, to motivate, inspire and connect the Czech artistic scene with those in other countries, and help foster conditions for the development of contemporary dance throughout the Czech Republic.

Vision

Our vision is to transform thinking about contemporary dance through openness to new impulses, mutual dialogue and cooperation at both national and international levels. We aim to remain a recognized and progressive cultural event in Europe.

We want to continue:

  • to make dance visible and accessible and bring it closer to all sections of the public without restrictions;
  • to promote the exchange and sharing of experiences from the national and international dance scene, to inspire and motivate experimentation;
  • to support the emergence of new works with international outreach and be a guarantee of high-quality cooperation;
  • to share valuable artistic experiences and inform the public about topics of social importance;
  • to promote the visibility of contemporary dance in the regions of the Czech Republic with respect for local partners and artists;
  • to be a respected partner open to dialogue at home and abroad.

We believe in the vital mission of dance as a living and constantly evolving art form. Therefore, we continue to explore its diversity, highlight the relevance of its artistic message, and support its development in the broadest possible public discourse.

Priority values pursued by the Artistic Council in fulfilling the festival's vision:

  • artistic quality
  • creativity and originality
  • diversity, courage to experiment beyond genre
  • timeliness of artistic message, themes and form
  • openness to sharing and collaboration
