Jan Martens studied at the Fontys Dansacademie in Tilburg, the Netherlands, and completed his dance studies in 2006 at the Artesis Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. He bases his works on the thesis that every body is capable of communication and has something to say, and rewrites the relationship between the performer and the audience. The debut I CAN RIDE A HORSE WHILST JUGGLING SO MARRY ME from 2010 was followed by other works such as THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER (2014), ODE TO THE ATTEMPT (2014), THE COMMON PEOPLE (2016), RULE OF THREE (2017), PASSING THE BECHDEL TEST (2018), co-production with fABULEUS or solo lostmovements. In 2020, he turned his attention to the big stage for the first time with any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones, followed by FUTUR PROCHE a production with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and his solo ELISABETH GETS HER WAY in 2021. He is associated artist at the arts center DE SINGEL in Antwerp and at La Comédie de Clermont-Ferrand (FR). With manager Klaartje Oerlemans, he co-founded dance organisation GRIP with the support of the Flemish government.
