TANEC PRAHA Festival 1991 | 17 June – 4 July 1991
The situation after the third year of the festival in 1991, when TANEC PRAHA was co-organized by the Theatre Community, was even more complicated. The festival's dimensions exceeded audience interest, relied on higher sales and ended up with a large deficit. Still, the critical response was very positive, especially the shocking Ballet pathétique by Jorma Uotinen. Maguy Marin introduced herself with the performance of Cinderella for the Lyon Opéra Ballet. Also there was Le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève led by Gradimir Pankov (with Axioma by Ohad Naharin) and the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. Liat Dror & Nir Ben Gal from Israel as well as Michele Noiret from Belgium and Jean Gaudin from France were among the other highlights of the program. The new laws in that year permitted the creation of independent legal entities, and so in the autumn of 1991, the Tanec Praha civic association (now a registered institute) was founded, which assumed all responsibility for the festival and began to work, still in very difficult conditions, to promote the festival towards the world dance scene, with an emphasis on the quality and diversity of the invited ensembles and artists.
