Flamenco for non flamenco bodies

"We immerse ourselves in the flamenco universe to bring forth everything we carry within."

This one-off workshop offers an entry point into the world of flamenco, designed for those who are curious to explore the rhythmic, expressive, and cultural depth of this art form. Through guided practice, participants will engage with the foundational elements of flamenco: compás (rhythm), palmas (hand clapping), jaleos (vocal encouragement), and structured improvisation.

We will explore the rhythm of tangos, using percussive footwork, body percussion, and voice. We will approach movement from its minimal internal impulse to its maximal expression, considering the body as both instrument and storyteller.

We’ll also explore the relationship between body and space, asking: how does flamenco move not only across the floor, but also on the wall?

The session culminates in the development of a brief group choreography that synthesizes the technical and creative material covered.

Let your body speak, clap, stomp, and bloom through flamenco.
Come take your first steps — primeros pasos — into this vibrant world.

Who is it for?

This class is for anyone curious about movement — no prior flamenco experience needed. Come with an open heart and a willingness to explore!

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable clothing
  • Flamenco accessories if you have them: shawl, fan, skirt, flowers

La Chachi (María del Mar Suárez) is a dancer and performer from Málaga who brings flamenco into dialogue with physical theatre and contemporary dramaturgy - rather than preserving tradition, she transforms it into a living, open language.
